My anglicized name is Terrance “Terry” Irwin. My Irish name is Toirdealḃaċ Ó Ciarṁacáin. It is a long story as to how my surname came to be in the first place and it is even a longer story as to how it came to become rare and anglicized in the second place. My grandfather’s anglicized name was William “Billy” Irwin. His Irish name was Liam Ó Ciarṁacáin. The story of my immigrant grandfather's anglicized surname is told in my booklet The Origin and Evolution of the Surname Ó Ciarṁacáin (Irwin). His American story is told in my booklet William “Billy” Irwin: Colorado Champion Pugilist (1895-1900).
